At this point I have yet to finish Winter’s Bone, I will shortly. The
overwhelming sense that I have at this point with not only Ree, but other
characters in the book, is the desire to escape a culture that has been
engrained for generations. For most that culture is itself a prison, with no
escape, so complying is their only way to survive.
The article Methland really hit home because it
could have very well been the small rural Minnesota community where I was
raised.
